Prashant Kishore is a political analyst who says that petrol and diesel can be brought under the ambit of GST in the Modi 3.0 government. The rules regarding budget for the states can be tightened. This will increase the dependence of the states on the central government. He has made many more predictions in the conversation with Aaj Tak.
Political analyst Prashant Kishore said that petroleum products can be brought under the ambit of GST in the third term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The financial autonomy of states can be curbed. In an interview with India Today, Prashant Kishor predicted structural and operational changes in the anti-corruption narrative of the Modi government.
Prashant Kishor said, “I think the Modi 3.0 government will start with a bang. There will be even greater concentration of both power and resources at the Centre. There can also be an attempt to reduce the financial autonomy of the states.” Prashant Kishor, who managed the election campaign for BJP and PM Modi in 2014, said there is no major anger against the Prime Minister and BJP will win around 303 seats.
Petrol and diesel can be brought under the ambit of GST.
Political strategist Kishore said states currently have three major sources of revenue – petroleum, liquor and land. He said, “I would not be surprised if petroleum is brought under the purview of GST.” At present, petroleum products like petrol, diesel, ATF and natural gas are outside the purview of GST. However, they are still liable to VAT, Central Sales Tax and Central Excise Duty.
Bringing petroleum products under GST has been a long standing demand of the industry. The states of the country have been against this demand, because it will cause huge loss of revenue to the states.
