People’s kitchen budget is seen to be shaking due to the rising cost. After onions, potatoes, now tomatoes are bringing tears to people’s eyes. Inflation is increasing rapidly.
The scorching heat this year has adversely affected the production of vegetables and fruits. Due to this, the prices of essential vegetables like onion, potato and tomato are increasing rapidly across the country. Due to the shortage of these vegetables in the markets, the prices are continuously increasing. From onions to tomatoes, these things are used in almost every vegetable.
In Mumbai and surrounding areas, people are having to buy tomatoes for around 100 rupees per kg. Even on the online platform, the price of tomato is running at Rs 90 to 95 per kg. Apart from Maharashtra, the price of tomato in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh is between Rs 80 and Rs 100 per kg.
The prices of vegetables go up more during monsoon
Every year the prices of vegetables go up during monsoon. Every year prices start to rise due to the effect of rainfall on the crops. But this year, the extreme heat has caused heavy damage to the production of vegetables. Due to this, the prices have started increasing even before the arrival of monsoon. Not only the production is affected due to rain but also a large quantity of vegetables are damaged during packing and transportation.
The summer did not allow so many tomatoes to grow
Due to the huge increase in the prices of tomatoes last year, the farmers of Maharashtra have produced large quantities of tomatoes this year. But, the summer did not allow to produce so many tomatoes. Farmers told CNBC TV 18 that many areas of Maharashtra have planted 4 times more tomatoes than last year. Despite this, due to summer, not much production could be done.
Junar region of the state produces 2000 boxes per acre of tomatoes every year. This year the production has reduced to only 500 to 600 bales per acre. The situation is the same in other areas as well.
Currently, there is no hope of relief in tomato prices
Currently, the public is not expecting any relief in tomato prices. People will have to face higher rates during rainy season as well. Monsoon is expected to be weak this year. Due to this, there is no improvement in tomato production. Delay in monsoon will not only delay the sowing of kharif crops but also the tomato production is likely to be weak. This will adversely affect the supply chain. The effect of inflation is also affecting the kitchen of every house due to which people’s budget has been shaken.
